had such a nice meal last night at sugar cafe on queen st. w....the owner (her name might be susan) is such a gracious and humble hostess. the food was delicious, obviously made with care and very reasonably priced....had a bottle of their house italian table wine (don't remember the name) for $22...good enough, drinkable...there's only a handful of wine but many are available in 1/2 litre. small dinner menu but very well executed.
started with the smoked paprika shrimp served with avocado, orange segments and mixed greens and their chickpea morrocan 'stew'....the stew won out here...very flavorful and delicious. for mains had the halibut done with oven roasted potatoes, spinach and mashed potatoes...perfectly cooked and very hearty....also had their coconut milk curried chicken served with basmati rice and some kind of mushroom i think...i was really looking forward to this dish but i would have liked a little more curry and a little more coconut milk but it was regardless very tasty...the halibut won the mains race for me.....we listened to the dessert list with watering mouths (amaretto bread pudding, lemon tart and flourless chocolate cake)....after much hmmming and hawing decided on just a yummy latte....shockingly the wonderful owner/server/hostess brought us over a 1/2 slice of each of the bread pudding and the lemon tart....wow! definitely save room for dessert at sugar cafe (or go just for dessert!)....had a wonderful evening....bottle of wine, 2 apps, 2 mains, 1 latte (and free dessert :o)) was just over $100 before tip.
can't wait to return.

Sugar cafe demonstrates the owner's eye for detail in well, the details. The liitle chocolate bar you get with your latte, the mini bowl and spoon in lieu of shakers for salt and pepper, and the little basket your cheque come in are some of the more obvious examples.
The food is straightforward but good brunch fare, and the decor simple.

Sugar is my fav. The French toast is so yummy and the little squares of chocolate, to die for. loved the atmosphere, French Toast and Omlette certainly stacked up very well to what comes out of Xacutti's Kitchen.

I've been to Xacutti for brunch a few times - it's quite good but to my taste, Sugar is a notch above on both food and coffee. Sugar is smaller, more casual and cozier and feels more like a neighbourhood spot while Xacutti is a bit more refined and sort of classier in its feel. Xacutti has a more extensive menu as well. Sugar is typically full and Xacutti, at least when I've been, has never been more than half full so there's a different vibe from that as well.

Plus did I mention the chocolate...????

They're open for brunch on Saturdays and Sundays, for sure by 11 and maybe even at 10? If you try it, please post - I'd be curious to hear your impressions.

How would you compare it to, say, Xacutti, for Brunch. That's definitely my favourite.

And what time is it open (Sat/Sun)?

Great brunch spot. Small, but nice menu. Eggs benny and florentine, a "petit dejeuner" with a hard boiled egg, multi-grain toast, brie, yoghurt and fresh fruit, an omelette of the day, etc. Best hot chocolate in the city. Excellent coffee and lattes. Very casual feel -- mismatched furniture (including a church pew), lots of natural light, friendly service. I've never had their lunch or dinner menus. Hard to compare to other places, as it's pretty unique.
They also serve those yummy milk chocolate squares with their hot chocolate... just in case you need to max out your chocolate experience! :)
