beets

Indian-style Chinese food is apparently exactly THAT-- it's 'popular' Chinese food from India (or Bombay, I guess). Or so the waiter says. He recommended the chili chicken with chow mein. I had the General George aaloo every time I've been there--I just can't stop laughing when I order it, because karob and another friend of ours thought that the General George items were hilarious. It's basically just the sauce. Like the General Tao chicken at other places? The General George aaloo is potato in a red sauce with lots of onions. Yummy!
It was good food, but the beets never went there again, mainly because it's WAY far from downtown, in Rexdale. You're probably imagining this little hole-in-the-wall place, right? Well, it's actually really posh. Table cloths, cloth napkins, instrumental bollywood soundtracks from the 70s in the background, dim lighting...
But I've gone back a few times since, including once or twice with my parents. And then, about a year ago, I was driving around Mississauga looking for a place to eat, and there was ANOTHER Bombay Chopsticks! It was really surreal for me, but we decided to eat there. It wasn't as good, because the waiter kept asking us to switch tables as larger groups came in.
The last time I was there, I decided to move on from the General George items and I ordered the mixed vegetables, except it came as 'vegetable meatballs' (as my aunt described them) in a sauce. They were deep fried balls made of potatoes, carrots and a few other veggies that were dunked in a sauce of some sort and served over rice. Sounds weird, I know. But other than a little to much ginger in the sauce, it was delish.
Anyway, if you're ever in the Finch-Kipling 'hood, check out the Indian-style Chinese food.
