I had heard good reviews of it before and was intrigued. Further intriguing was the nowtoronto review they had posted outside their door. And so I went in.
The review had mentioned a fiery âJellied Tofuâ dish that sounded horrible but tasted great. I can vouch for the sound versus taste thing. However, between 2002 and 2005 they have turned this dish into something very mild.
However, the dan dan noodles were quite spicy and very delicious. The noodles themselves were cooked in the back kitchen and then brought out with a topping of some sort of ground meat (pork?) on the top. The server then took it over to a âsalad barâ-looking stand behind the front counter where he drizzled chili oil (with lots of fragments of dried chilis throughout) over it and then put a bunch of fresh sliced cucumber over the top of that. All told it made for a delicious meal.
I had had a dish by the same name at PF Changâs in Albuquerque but it was nothing like it. The difference was the difference between having pasta at Pane e Vino versus the Olive Garden. The chain restaurant can make something that approximates the dish but doesnât do it justice.
