I used to buy their bagels at the St. Lawrence Market all the time
because they were the closest I could find in Toronto to Montreal
bagels, but then I discovered that they are the only merchants in
the whole market who refuse to accept Toronto Dollars, an
alternative currency scheme that gives 10% of all purchases to local
charities without costing the customer a penny. Evidently, the
people who run St. Urbain bagels have no social conscience and
only care about profits. My family and most of my friends no longer
frequent the place and won't until they change their callous policy.

The man who appears to be the owner/manager is not very friendly; never smiles at anyone. The ladies are friendly. I seem to get resistance when I ask for extra bags and twist-ties.

I make the 30-min trip to the Bathurst location, even if I have to use the 407, just to get them because the bagels taste so close to Montreal-style bagels (however clearly not the real thing). Other bagel places are just bread with holes.

St. Urbain bagels in the market don't even remotely resemble Montreal bagels. I got angry at them for using the name "St. Urbain." Mordecai Richler must be rolling in his grave.

St. Urbain has a store on Bathurst just north of Steeles. ALso one on Eglinton somewhere. There is also a place called Montreal Bagels on Bathurst south of Wilson a few blocks. Neither of these is EXACTLY a Montreal bagel, but they are close enough for those times when you can't get to Montreal to buy the real thing.

Bagel House makes a very good Montreal Bagel, no doubt and way better than St. Urbain. However it is no where near 100% equal to St. Viateur in Montreal. Maybe about 70-75% but no way 100%. Not nearly as light or delicate but still very good-as are all the other bagel joints you've mentioned.

The place at St. Lawrence Market is St. Urbain. It's the closest to Montreal style that you'll find right downtown. But, as several others have already mentioned, if you want true Montreal bagels, you'll have to go to the Bagel House on Bayview, near Millwood, or on Avenue Rd., near Fairlawn. These are the real deal (and terribly addictive, for those who like Montreal style bagels).

Oh and btw, stick to the sesame for the full on Montreal bagel experience. :)

the bagels aren't exactly from Montreal. They are made right here in TO, by a company that comes from Montreal. They call the bagels “St-Urbain style bagels”.

What is it with St-Urbain? The two notorious Montreal bagel shops aren't even on St-Urbain! Only because Mordecai Richler and most of the Montreal Jews in the 1940's lived on St-Urbain, Torontonians are going to state: bagels = St-Urbain? It makes no sense. Whats more, the Mile-End isnt limited to St-Urbain. There's St-Laurent, Waverly, Fairmount, St-Viateur
