I am thrilled to announce that I have found a fantastic sushi place within a reasonable distance from my home.
Not that I'll ever give up on Nijo. But tonight Sakawaya Japanese Bistro proved to be a serious contender.
I should stress that Sakawaya is not a sushi restaurant, but a Japanese bistro which happens to offer a fine variety of sushi on a nicely varied menu.
Located on the Danforth at Jones, Sakawaya is not much to look at from the outside but the interior exudes a simple elegance. Although the service is a little slower than I appreciate, the staff were friendly and quick enough to refill tea and water. Our meals ranged from sushi (obviously) to tempura donburi and gyoza; everyone was highly impressed with the quality of the food. The soups and salads were a nice added touch were the salads and soups...no one ordered them, but they were brought just the same to complement our meals.
If you happen to be east of Yonge when the desperation for some Japanese cuisine hits (as I so often am) this place will definitely cure the craving.
