Iâve been to Rashnaa avidly enough to say that Iâve tried the entire menu, save 1 or 2 dishes. Therefore it goes without saying that this one of the best downtown for South Indian/ Sri Lankan food.
Rashnaa has been open in little Cabbagetown for nearly 2 decades. Since itâs opening, other lankan shops and restaurants have opened down the dreary concrete of Parliament.
The view isnât great. Itâs a renovated house, with 1 main dining room that gets dark very easily, and scattered tables here and there. As soon as you walk through the door, youâll get a whiff of the spices and meats that come through those mean kitchen doors in the back. The bar serves Arac (Sri lankan coconut licquor) and Tiger beer.
The Masala dosa - Easily the most popular dish of the venue based on what my wandering eyes have noticed. This dish is basically a huge Dosa (think of it as a sugarless crepe, with crispy edges) stuffed with spiced potatoes. Itâs usually accompanied by a variety of sambals and curries depending on whatâs available in the kitchen. This is a must have.
Chicken Curry: Careful with the bones, this curry is the perfect accompaniment to basmati rice. Itâs not too spicy, and greatly flavourful.
Beef Devil Platter , This is the type of dish you would order if you can handle spice.
If youâre wondering, yes the Maligatawny soup is fantastic here. Personally, Iâm not a huge fan of the soup but this is some really good stuff.
Dessert:
Try the Vattalappam. A Sri Lankan take on Crème Brullee if you will. Tastes almost as good as my Dadâs recipe.
Drink of choice:
Always order a Lassi and make sure you have some Raita.
Enjoy!
