Vegetarian food is good !

I have found the vegetarian food at Rashna to be consistently good. The Masala Dosa is excellent, the samosas are great, and the other vegetarian entrees I have tried have been good. The meat dishes have been somewhat inconsistent. The restaurant could use a decor facelift -- but the prices on the menu are very reasonable, so the less than stellar interior design can be forgiven, as far as I am concerned. Delivery can be a little slow, but takeout is generally prompt and on time.

STAY AWAY!

This is the first review I have ever written in four years of eating out for lunch in Toronto. This place was so bad I thought I had to warn others. My companion for lunch agrees, calling it, "Terrible." This was by far the worst experience I have ever had. The service was slow and the waiter beyond disinterested. Food very average. The most amazing thing to me was that even the tap water we requested with our meal tasted bad.

I’ve been to Rashnaa avidly enough to say that I’ve tried the entire menu, save 1 or 2 dishes. Therefore it goes without saying that this one of the best downtown for South Indian/ Sri Lankan food.

Rashnaa has been open in little Cabbagetown for nearly 2 decades. Since it’s opening, other lankan shops and restaurants have opened down the dreary concrete of Parliament.
The view isn’t great. It’s a renovated house, with 1 main dining room that gets dark very easily, and scattered tables here and there. As soon as you walk through the door, you’ll get a whiff of the spices and meats that come through those mean kitchen doors in the back. The bar serves Arac (Sri lankan coconut licquor) and Tiger beer.

The Masala dosa - Easily the most popular dish of the venue based on what my wandering eyes have noticed. This dish is basically a huge Dosa (think of it as a sugarless crepe, with crispy edges) stuffed with spiced potatoes. It’s usually accompanied by a variety of sambals and curries depending on what’s available in the kitchen. This is a must have.

Chicken Curry: Careful with the bones, this curry is the perfect accompaniment to basmati rice. It’s not too spicy, and greatly flavourful.

Beef Devil Platter , This is the type of dish you would order if you can handle spice.

If you’re wondering, yes the Maligatawny soup is fantastic here. Personally, I’m not a huge fan of the soup but this is some really good stuff.

Dessert:
Try the Vattalappam. A Sri Lankan take on Crème Brullee if you will. Tastes almost as good as my Dad’s recipe.

Drink of choice:
Always order a Lassi and make sure you have some Raita.

Enjoy!
