My mother used to make this. I dont know where the recipe came from but it's different from traditional Indian cooking where ground black pepper & vinegar is not used much.

Cut and clean 1kg chicken and marinate it with 1tbsp vinegar and a bit of ginger + garlic paste.

Finely chop 3 medium size onions + 1" ginger + 4 cloves garlic.

Heat 6 tbsp of oil in a thick bottomed stock pot and add the chopped ginger + garlic and fry for 10 sec. Add the chopped onion and the following whole spices: 1 bay leaf + 4 cloves + 1" cinnamon + 4 cardamoms. Slow cook for 1/2 hr - 1 hr on low heat until the onions are nicely browned. Halfway through the cooking, add 4 large dry red chillies ( broken into pieces). These chilies are available at Indian stores (optional)

Increase the heat and add 1/2 tsp turmeric powder + sliced potato + fry for 2 min. Add 2 tbsp freshly ground black pepper and mix. Add the marinated chicken and fry for 10 min until the meat is sealed. Add just enough water to cook the chicken. Cover and cook. When almost done, remove the lid and dry out the water to get a thick gravy.
