Mackerel in Brine

Soak the cleaned/gutted mackerel for 45 minutes in a mixture of:
500 ml water
90 gram salt
18 gram brown sugar
1 T lemon juice
2 cloves of garlic
1/2 onion
Just heat a little bit of water to dissolve the salt & sugar. Then add the rest of the ingredients. Soak the fish in a cold/cool brine.
I tried to smoke mackerel before, but the results weren't that good.
I hoped it was because I was always forgetting to brine it first.
This time I didn't forget. And I think it made a difference.
