Share on TwitterWhen we were living on our boat in the Santa Cruz Yacht Harbor, we frequently had encounters with the local avian population. We saw a lot of mallard ducks, seagulls, geese, and coots at various times of the year. But by far our favorite was the great blue heron. Several of them live in the trees around the harbor, and hunt for fish in its waters. This one was perched on the rocks a few feet from the dock. They are shy birds, so I was lucky to get close. This was taken with a point-and-shoot pocket camera. A moment after we took this shot, it let out a squawk and flew away (see the next picture, "Great Blue Heron in Flight").
