Most tourists do not see this view. You have to go on a half hour horse ride into the desert to get this vantage point.

Most photos are taken from the Nile side with the Sphinx in the shot, and they just need to turn the camera 180 degrees and the teeming city of Cairo is just across the Nile. Most first time visitors imagine the pyramids to be way off in the desert - not so. You can just see Cairo in the far right of this image.

I was young (just 19yo) and alone in a strange country, staying in a youth hostel where no-one spoke English - before backpacking was invented. I took this photo on horseback after a 30 minute ride to the best photo vantage point out in the dunes. Scanned from a slide, photographed in December 1978.
